What’s more romantic than a movie night? Whether you’re single, dating, or happily married, Valentine’s Day is a great excuse to sit back and watch movies. Not sure what to watch? Here are some suggestions!
5. Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005)
This action-packed film may not be the most obvious choice for a Valentine’s Day movie, but it is a great combination of various genres, including romance and comedy. Mr. and Mrs. Smith are an unhappily married couple whose frustrations come to a head when they discover that they are spies for rival agencies. When their bosses order them to kill each other, things get a little messy, but this mess may be what their marriage needs. This movie is perfect for couples who may be having a rough time this Valentine’s Day, or for those who aren’t really into the lovey-dovey mush of typical romance movies.
4. Blind Date (aka Un peu, beaucoup, aveuglément!) (2015)
Try something new this Valentine’s Day with Blind Date. This French film comes with subtitles so that English speakers can follow along as two neighbors fall in love. After Whosit, a competitive piano player, moves into the apartment next to Whatsit (their names are explained within the film), a borderline acrophobic game-maker, things get noisy as they realize that the wall between their apartments is hollow. They can hear everything the other is doing. From all of their fighting emerges the chance for them to help with one other’s problems and form a bond that isn’t based on appearances. This film is wonderful for single people looking to watch a hopeful, silly romance movie. An added bonus: this film is currently available on Netflix!
3. Sisters (2015)
Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be all about couples and romance. Sometimes you just need a good girls day or a sisters day. If that’s the case, then Sisters is the movie for you! Tina Fey and Amy Poehler star as two sisters who decide to throw one last high school party before their parents sell their childhood home. Needless to say, things get wild. Every minute of this movie is hilarious, and while there are a few couples to “Aww” over, they’re not at the forefront to rub in your face.
2. When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Are you stuck in the friend zone or resisting because you think it might ruin the friendship this Valentine’s Day? Whether you’re moping or overthinking, When Harry Met Sally will be a good distraction for you. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan play best friends who eventually fall for each other, but their journey is not as easy as it sounds. This one especially works for anyone who is interested in late 80s movies. It has a relaxed tone that most modern movies lack. In addition, fans of Carrie Fisher can see her here in something that isn’t Star Wars.
1. Valentine’s Day (2010)
The title says it all. This movie is a must for every Valentine’s Day. The great thing about this movie is that it combines several different stories ranging from two people going on a first date to a happily married couple celebrating the day of love. These stories are acted about by a star-studded cast including Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba, Anne Hathaway, Jamie Foxx, and Topher Grace. Romance, comedy, and drama are all wrapped up perfectly in this one movie. You couldn’t ask for a more appropriate and entertaining Valentine’s Day movie.
