Review: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

By: Patrick Doss

The wait is finally over. After what has seemed like an eternity, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been released to theaters across the globe, and for the most part, the wait was well worth it! The J.J. Abrams directed film is one-hundred thirty five minutes of nonstop action, and it will surely quench the thirst of even the most dry-mouthed Star Wars fan.

The events of the film take place roughly thirty years after the battle of Endor. (The end of The Return of the Jedi) The main storyline revolves around a lone wolf scavenger by the name of Rey, and her attempts to return a BB-8 droid to General Leia Organa of the Resistance, as it has a partial clue to the whereabouts of the lost Luke Skywalker. During her adventures she is assisted by Finn, an AWOL stormtrooper who suddenly has seen the errors of his ways. The trio meets up with Han Solo and Chewbacca, and they become swept up in the Resistance, a rebellious group who goes against the evil First Order, a group that has risen from the former Galactic Empire.

The overall performances by the cast are phenomenal. Daisy Ridley’s portrayal of Rey, as well as John Boyega’s portrayal of Finn breathe new life into the Star Wars franchise, and the performances of Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher are as excellent as ever. Adam Driver’s portrayal of Kylo Ren, the main antagonist in the plot, is both mystifying and incredibly terrifying.

As far as the rating is concerned, I am going to go ahead and give it a 4.5/5. Despite the overall greatness of the film, there are a few repeated storylines that may give filmgoers a slight feeling of disappointment. However, the many new developments throughout the film are certainly intriguing, and I can certainly say that I will once again be purchasing the earliest possible tickets when Episode 8 is released. For an added bonus, I would strongly recommend paying the extra few dollars and seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 3-D. The beautiful shots coupled with insanely fast paced battle scenes make this arguably the best shot Star Wars film yet! Overall, the mostly positive qualities of the film make Star Wars: The Force Awakens the absolute must see movie of the holiday season!
