87th Academy Award Winners

By Andrew Haas
The 87th Academy Awards had many highs and lows last night. In terms of the winners, there were a few surprises. Every film nominated for Best Picture won at least one category. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman managed to take home four Oscars, including Best Director and Best Picture. Many expected the latter to be taken by Boyhood, which only managed to take home Best Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette. Tying with Birdman in the number of wins was Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, followed by Whiplash with three wins. A surprising highlight for me was when Best Foreign Film went to Ida by Pawel Pawlikowski, who managed to make his full acceptance speech past the dreaded “walk-off” music. Some were surprised Michael Keaton didn’t win best Best Actor, which went to Eddie Redmayne for The Theory of Everything. Many were also upset over The LEGO Movie’s snub for Best Animated Feature, which went to Disney’s Big Hero 6. While its song, “Everything is Awesome”, was nominated for Best Original Song, it lost to “Glory” from Selma.
