‘Tomorrowland’ Trailer Review

By Cassandra Eiler

As some may guess from the title, the upcoming Disney film, Tomorrowland, presents the idea of a futuristic vision. The film depicts a world where, as the poster suggests, “nothing is impossible.”

This is the extent of the information given in  the trailer. Two minutes doesn’t allow much time for details, but the true goal of the trailer seems to be building suspense and prompting questions.

The trailer opens with a teenage girl, portrayed by Britt Robertson, in some sort of law enforcement station. She remains indifferent to her surroundings until she picks up an unfamiliar pin that somehow found its way into her belongings. When she touches this pin, which momentarily transports her to an unfamiliar world, she seems reawakened.

This scene provokes a few questions. Who is this girl? What did she do to get in trouble with the law? Where did this pin come from, and why did it end up in her possession? The trailer doesn’t answer these questions, but the scene includes some very intriguing details.

A television in the police station shows a video of a violent riot, indicating the troublesome state of society. Another clue is the girl’s expression when she realizes that she’s been handed a gift; for the first time, her eyes sparkle with wonder as she stares in awe at this new world.

The final detail presents itself in the form a voice-over. “What if there was a place, a secret place where nothing was impossible? A miraculous place where you could actually change the world. You wanna go?” With only seconds of the trailer remaining, George Clooney appears on screen to prompt the final segment of the inquiry, convincing viewers that, yes, they do want to witness this miraculous place.

By provoking many questions, the Tomorrowland trailer intrigues audiences while withholding enough information to pull them into the theaters to find out the answers.

The Tomorrowland release date is May 22, 2015.
