New Promo for NBC’s ‘Peter Pan: Live!’ Soars In

By Julia Ricci

With just two weeks until airtime, NBC has released the latest promo for Peter Pan: Live!, a live musical special starring Allison Williams (HBO’s Girls) as Peter and Christopher Walken as Captain Hook.

The minute-long preview of the musical special gives viewers a sample of Williams’ and Walken’s singing and dancing chops on the classic songs “I’m Flying,” “I Won’t Grow Up,” and “Never Never Land,” as well as “Vengeance,” one of three new songs written by Amanda Green, the daughter of Adolph Green, one of the show’s original lyricists.

The original 1954 Broadway production of Peter Pan starred Mary Martin as Peter and Cyril Ritchard as Hook, both of whom won Tony Awards for their performances. It was directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins and the score was written by Mark “Moose” Charlap and Carolyn Leigh, and songs were written by Jule Styne, Betty Comden, and Adolph Green. Martin and Ritchard reprised their roles in a re-staging of the production for live telecasts in 1955 and 1956, both of which were so popular that a videotaped version was presented in 1960. They were even rebroadcast in 1963, 1966, and 1973, and released on home video in 1990.

Peter Pan: Live! is NBC’s second live musical venture with executive producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan, who brought a live version of The Sound of Music: Live! starring Carrie Underwood to prime-time in 2013. The Sound of Music: Live! was a ratings hit with 21.3 million viewers, so it is not surprising that the network is making this a holiday tradition by following up with Peter Pan, a live production of The Music Man in 2015, and a live staging of military courtroom drama A Few Good Men in 2016.

Peter Pan: Live! will air Thursday, December 4 at 8 pm ET on NBC.
