YouTube Spotlight: Tyler Oakley

YouTube Personality is a term that is relatively new but not surprising as the internet is the center of the world nowadays, there is even a page on Wikipedia listing all of those who have gained their popularity through YouTube. One of the first YouTube personalities to rise to fame through the popular website is Tyler Oakley, a Michigan native who currently resides in Los Angeles, California.

Tyler Oakley began making videos in his dorm room in 2007 while attending Michigan State University. His first video received over 70,000 views and to date he has 3.75 million subscribers on YouTube. He not only posts weekly videos on his own channel, but also co-hosts a weekly pop-culture show “Top That!” for PopSugar. His weekly videos range from him giving life advice, talking about what he is obsessing over at the time, or collaborations with other YouTubers. He has dubbed himself a “Professional Fangirl” and has interviewed One Direction on a couple of occasions, appeared in a Super Bowl commercial, and hosted a red carpet event for the Trevor Project.

    Oakley, who has been openly gay since his high school days, is a strong supporter of the Trevor Project; he even interned for the organization while in college. He has stated that his time spent with the Trevor Project strongly influenced him when it came to deciding what he wanted to spend his life doing.

Overall, many of Oakley’s fans would say that the YouTuber’s videos are highly uplifting and will undoubtedly put a smile on viewers’ faces. Oakley can also be found on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Tumblr.
