Media streaming giant Netflix is bringing the grim world of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events to their growing collection of original programming. A Series of Unfortunate Events follows the story of three orphaned children Violet, Klaus, and Sunny as they face many unfortunate events as they avoid their uncle Count Olaf and try to find out why their parents died.
Many probably remember the slightly infamous 2004 feature film starring Jim Carrey, Jude Law and Meryl Streep that grossed $200 million worldwide according to boxofficemojo. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series’ author, Daniel Handler, also known as Lemony Snicket, will serve as an executive producer on the project. Handler said about the project: “I can’t believe it. After years of providing top-quality entertainment on demand, Netflix is risking its reputation and its success by associating itself with my dismaying and upsetting books.” (IGN)
As a avid fan of the original 13 books, I for one am extremely excited to see this series get the television adaptation it deserves. Here’s hoping Netflix can pull it off.
