66th Annual Primetime Emmy Nominees

By Julia Ricci

The nominees for the 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced Thursday, and the competition is tougher than ever.

Highly-acclaimed new series and early contender True Detective (HBO) will face off against Downton Abbey (PBS), Game of Thrones (HBO), House of Cards (Netflix), Mad Men (AMC), and perennial favorite Breaking Bad (AMC) in the drama category. Leading actor in a drama will be just as tight with 10-time nominee Jon Hamm of Mad Men battling against Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston, The Newsroom’s Jeff Daniels, True Detective’s Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and House of Cards’ Kevin Spacey.

To increase chances of success, Netlflix darling Orange is the New Black was entered as a comedy this time around and will compete against four-time winner Modern Family (ABC), FX’s Louie, CBS’s The Big Bang Theory, and HBO’s Veep and new series Silicon Valley.

Cable programs continue to rule the television realm, taking four of the six slots in comedy series and completely shutting out the commercial broadcast networks in the drama and miniseries/movie categories. They even led the pack in overall recognition: HBO’s Game of Thrones earned the most nods at 19, followed by FX’s Fargo, with 18, and American Horror Story: Coven, with 17. Netflix’s House of Cards and Orange is the New Black garnered 13 and 12 nominations, respectively, which is impressive for a company in only its second year of original programming.
