Summer is just around the corner, and that means the end of another television season. With season finales coming out left and right, networks have already shown previews for summer shows. From NBC to FX to AMC and CBS to TNT to HBO, networks everywhere are ready to help fill the void left by fall and winter shows. With big names like Steven Soderbergh, Halle Berry, Zoe Saldana, Clive Owen, and Steven Spielberg responsible for some of these programs, let’s look at five shows on television this summer.

CBS gave a straight-to-series order for this project, which features Halle Berry as an astronaut who has just returned to Earth after a year in space. Executive produced by Steven Spielberg, the show is shrouded in mystery. Perhaps CBS is stepping outside the confines of the procedural? With the monumental success of the Oscar winning movie Gravity, viewers are curious for this new show to premiere July 9th.
Based on Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s vampire horror novel trilogy of the same name, The Strain centers on an epidemiologist called in to investigate a mysterious biohazard situation at John F. Kennedy International Airport involving a plane that lands with two hundred corpses and four survivors. Given the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370, it will be interesting to see how del Toro and Hogan’s universe both reinforces and challenges our notions of this similar real-life incident.
In this highly-anticipated spin-off series of the hit ‘90s sitcom Boy Meets World, Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel a.k.a. Corey and Topanga, return to our television sets. Now, the beloved couple has a pre-teen daughter. Played by newcomer Rowan Blanchard, Riley Matthews promises to be as curious and mischievous as her parents. In addition to the return of the legendary Mr. Feeney, this show cannot be missed by the nostalgic die-hard fans of the original series. It’s premiere date has yet to be announced.
Based on the 1967 best-selling suspense novel by Ira Levin, this new adaptation of Rosemary’s Baby centers on a young married couple who escape New York and move to Paris with hopes of leaving their sad past behind. After a series of unfortunate events, Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse are presented an offer they can’t refuse – an apartment at the most prestigious address in the city. Problem is, it comes with a haunted past and an immeasurable price. This NBC miniseries stars Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Star Trek) as Rosemary and premieres Sunday, May 11th.
A new summer NBC show is a comedy executive produced by Amy Poehler and her brother Greg Poehler, who also stars in it. A successful lawyer with celebrity clients quits his job and moves to Sweden with his girlfriend. Amy Poehler is one of the many guest stars who will play exaggerated versions of themselves. Other guest stars include Will Ferrell, and Amy’s co-star on Parks and Recreation Aubrey Plaza. Let’s hope this show will attract the many fans from Parks and Rec.
