Artist Spotlight: Havana Brown

   By Tyler Clark

DJ Havana Brown is one of the most in-demand DJs in the world. She has toured with big names such as Britney Spears, Rihanna, The Pussycat Dolls, and Chris Brown. Before all her success, Havana Brown was just an Australian girl with a dream.

Havana Brown started her music career  shortly after graduating from high school. She wanted to take a year off before going to university to pursue her dreams. She then moved to the UK when she signed with a major label there as a member of a group named Fishbowl. The group fell apart when they were about to release their first single due to fighting among the members.

She learned how to DJ from a friend and took on the name DJ Havana Brown and began mixing in clubs in Melbourne and Australia. In 2008, she signed to Island Records Australia and started a compilation album series called Crave. The series featured Havana’s mixes of popular songs; every one charting in Australia’s top 10.

In the same year, she supported Rihanna and The Pussycat Dolls on Australian tours and supported Britney Spears on her European and Australian legs of her Circus Tour.

In 2011, Havana Brown began her pop singing career and released her first single “We Run The Night.” In September of that year, Havana signed with US label Universal Republic Records. Popular producer RedOne remixed “We Run The Night” and Pitbull was featured on the new version of the track. It was released on September 27, 2011, in the United States and peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs.

Shortly after, she released her first EP When The Lights Go Out. It peaked at 50 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and went platinum in Australia. Her second single off the EP, “Big Banana,” peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs, making it her second number 1 single in the US.

In September 2013, Havana announced the completion of her debut album and released its first single, “Flashing Lights,” which became her third number 1 single in the US. Her album, also titled Flashing Lights, was released in Australia and New Zealand on October 11, 2013. The album peaked at number 6 in Australia. The second single off of her album, “Warrior,” was released in September 2013, has gone on to double platinum in Australia, and is currently charting at number 17 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs.

While no release date for the US has been set for album, there is talk that she is planning on re-releasing her album for the US. This speculation comes after she released a new single, “Whatever We Want,” not featured on the album. Havana Brown has proven that she is ready for the US pop music scene with three number 1 singles and one currently charting in the top 40. We can only hope she is given the chance to release her album here, to prove she is not only a successful DJ, but also a bona fide pop star.
